Jordan Chiles may have been bumped up to a bronze in the Olympic gymnastics floor routine final, but her reaction deserved a gold.
The Team USA gymnast had ranked fifth on the scoreboard after her routine, the last of the competition, received a 13.666.
However, after submitting a score inquiry, her result was increased to 13.766, boosting her into third place behind teammate Simone Biles, who took silver, and Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who won. Romania’s Ana Bărbosu had been the presumed bronze medalist before the development.
The eleventh-hour twist resulted in a positively iconic reaction from Chiles, who screamed and leapt into coach Cecile Landi’s arms. She started running away, apparently to do a victory lap, but then changed her mind and squatted down on the ground to cry. She was swiftly picked up by her coach as Biles ran over to embrace her, and the three jumped up and down.
In the stands, teammates Suni Lee and Jade Carey could be seen watching with mouths agape.
It was Chiles’ first individual medal. She won gold with the team last week and silver in the team event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Hoda Kotb had a highly relatable reaction to Jordan Chiles history-making bronze medal win at the Paris Summer Olympics!
The American gymnast, 23, may have made the podium of the women’s floor exercise finals on Monday, Aug. 5 — but her third-place finish didn’t come without a fight.
Chiles was initially in fifth place. But per NBC Sports, received a tenth of a point back to her score after her coaches, including Cecile Landi, submitted an appeal of the score on her behalf. After reviewing her routine, judges gave Chiles full credit for a skill in her routine called a Gogean, which is a split leap that includes a 1.5-turn.

Her initial score was 13.666, but the added tenth meant she jumped from fifth to third place. She joined Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and Simone Biles (who won gold and silver medals respectively) on the first all-Black gymnastics podium in history.
Upon realizing that the gymnast’s coaches had challenged the score and Chiles had won the bronze medal, Kotb, 59, had a similar reaction as Chiles did (who was unaware that her coaches had made the inquiry on her behalf) and it’s very entertaining to watch.
The Today co-host — wearing a bright blue dress in a video posted to Instagram on Monday — stood up from her seat in shock, banging her hands on a table.

“What? What just happened?” Kotb asked someone off-camera. “Wait…what?” Kotb continued, her eyes full of shock, as people around her asked if someone had made an inquiry into the score.
“What?” the TV personality eventually squeals, clapping her hands with joy as she and everyone around her cheered and clapped. “Oh, my God!” shen then screamed in the video, laughing and clenching her fists.
The video ended with Kotb sitting down in her chair with her head in her hands, coming down from the excitement.
“All of us after finding out Jordan Chiles actually won the bronze after her floor routine,” text over the video read, while Today captioned the Instagram post, “Wait, WHAT?! This was an unbelievable moment. After an inquiry, Jordan Chiles actually won bronze for her floor routine. #ParisOlympics.”

“I have no words, but I’m so proud of myself,” Chiles said after her bronze finish, per NBC News. She had a rasp to her voice after all of the excitement. “So losing my voice means everything, because it takes a while for me to do that.”
