The suspension of Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for a late hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has spotlighted a long-standing issue in the NFL: the ambiguous nature of quarterback sliding rules.
While Al-Shaair’s hit was widely criticized, players like Micah Parsons and Jahlani Tavai have raised concerns about how these rules create challenges for defenders.
Cowboys star Micah Parsons pointed out how quarterbacks exploit the flexibility of sliding to gain unfair advantages.
“If a quarterback acts like he’s going out of bounds, he should go out of bounds. If he’s acting like he’s going to slide, that’s where you should mark him,” Parsons remarked.
He specifically cited Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been accused of “fake sliding” to gain extra yards.
Plays like these place defenders in an impossible position, forcing them to process split-second decisions about whether to tackle or risk a penalty.
This sentiment was echoed by Patriots linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who noted on the Greg Hill Show that tackling quarterbacks has become increasingly difficult.
“You don’t know if they’re gonna slide or go for extra yards,” Tavai added on the Greg Hill Show.
“Defenders hesitate to avoid penalties, allowing quarterbacks to exploit the situation.”
He lamented how the game has shifted from the more physical play of earlier eras to one heavily protective of QBs.
Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons on the quarterback slide:
“I just think the NFL should do a better job clearing up the gray area. If a quarterback acts like he’s going out of bounds, he should go out of bounds, that’s where you should mark him at. If he’s acting like he’s going…— Clarence Hill Jr (@clarencehilljr) December 5, 2024
Mahomes feels he is playing within the rules
Facing criticism, Patrick Mahomes addressed the debate, defending his decision-making while sliding.
“I’m just playing football at the end of the day,” Mahomes explained, emphasizing he doesn’t aim to put defenders in jeopardy. He acknowledged, however, the challenges defenders face.
“99% of guys are not trying to hurt anybody,” Mahomes concluded.

The NFL’s emphasis on player safety, especially for quarterbacks, is essential, but the ambiguity in sliding rules creates a gray area that complicates the game for defenders. Parsons and other players have called for clearer guidelines to ensure fairness while maintaining safety.
As this debate unfolds, the league faces the challenge of balancing offensive advantages with defensive integrity to preserve the competitive spirit of football.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has emerged as the new front-runner to purchase one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises.
You may recall that Jeff Bezos had interest in purchasing the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder, but they wound up selling the franchise to the Josh Harris-led group for $6.05 billion.
There have also been rumors about Bezos potentially buying the Seattle Seahawks. Since Paul Allen’s passing in 2018, the team has been run by his sister, Jody Allen.
Speculation is growing about New York Jets owner Woody Johnson potentially selling the team as the Jets finish out another disastrous season. The Jets entered 2024 with Super Bowl expectations, but Aaron Rodgers and company have been a giant disappointment with a 3-8 record.
According to Bovada, Jeff Bezos is now the betting favorite to purchase the Jets from Johnson and take over as their next owner. Johnson has owned the football organization since 2000.
