The Kansas City Chiefs are set to bolster their offensive line-up by adding three-time, first-team All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins to their ranks.

The defending NFL champions are reportedly finalising a trade deal with the Tennessee Titans for the 32-year-year old wide receiver, according to ESPN. The Chiefs are expected to give up a conditional fourth-round NFL Draft pick in exchange for Hopkins. This move would see Hopkins receiving throws from two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, a significant upgrade from his current quarterbacks Will Levis and Mason Rudolph.

Hopkins joined the Titans in July 2023 on a two-year, $26 million contract and managed seven receiving touchdowns for 1,057 yards last season. However, this season has seen a dip in Hopkins’ performance and usage due to the Titans’ faltering offensive line.

Despite their unbeaten start to 2024, the Chiefs have been looking to strengthen their offense following the loss of wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and injuries to Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and running back Isiah Pacheco.

Speculation had suggested that the Kansas City Chiefs had been eyeing a potential trade for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp. According to reports, the Rams are open to exploring options that would enable a deal to be made.

Kupp had an impressive season in 2021, setting an NFL record with 2,425 receiving yards in the regular season and postseason, and earning the title of Super Bowl MVP. Meanwhile, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been making do with a depleted offense in the early stages of the 2024 season, plagued by injuries.

The Chiefs secured a convincing 28-18 win over the San Francisco 49ers in their most recent game, a repeat of Super Bowl LVIII. However, Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce have not been at their best this season, with Mahomes throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes and Kelce yet to score a touchdown.

Mahomes has now gone two consecutive games without a touchdown pass for only the second time in his career. “I just don’t think it’s normal for what you’ve seen from us because there’s not a lot of passing touchdowns,” Mahomes commented.

“There’s been a lot of turnovers, especially by me. I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team. It’s not just about me, it’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that.

“It’s about playing team football and I believe if we continue to work, we’ll get better offensively throwing the ball down the field. But until then, it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we’ve got a great defense and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”
