Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave a significant injury update on his ankle ahead of Saturday’s home contest against the AFC South-leading Houston Texans.

Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs’ 21-7 road win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Backup Carson Wentz finished the game for Mahomes, who was initially considered week-to-week.

Per Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star, Mahomes told reporters on Tuesday that his ankle injury is healing “better” and “quicker” than the one he suffered in the 2022 Divisional Round against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite the obvious and painful ankle injury, Patrick Mahomes played through it and led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl 58 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. So it’s awfully encouraging that his current ankle issue already feels better.

The Chiefs (13-1) are two games up on the Buffalo Bills (11-3) for the AFC’s top seed and only first-round bye. The Chiefs either need a) two wins to clinch the No. 1 seed or b) one victory and a Bills loss over their final three weeks.

Chiefs Can Afford To Play It Safe With Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City is still in a good spot to lock up the conference’s top seed, even if they lose to Houston on Saturday. So they can afford to play it safe and rest Mahomes this week, also considering that they won in Buffalo and Baltimore last year en route to a second straight Super Bowl title.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived fan favorite and three-time Super Bowl champion-winning running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in a surprise move.

On Monday afternoon, Clyde Edwards-Helaire bid farewell to the Chiefs in an emotional X/Twitter post. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero confirmed that CEH has been waived by the defending Super Bowl champions.

Edwards-Helaire was brought back by the Chiefs on a one-year deal in the offseason, after they declined the fifth-year option on his rookie deal. But the 2020 first-round pick hasn’t seen any playing time this year, with Kareem Hunt emerging as the RB1 during Isiah Pacheco’s recovery from a leg injury.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Chiefs, to go along with 89 receptions for 765 yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He helped them to consecutive Super Bowl championships in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire Needed A Fresh Start

The Chiefs offense has been inconsistent this season, but the Hunt-Pacheco rushing duo will play a vital role in their bid for a three-peat. With no role for CEH, it was only fair for him to get waived and explore opportunities elsewhere.
