Bill Belichick was reportedly interested in ending a quarter-century grudge with the longtime rival New York Jets.
After a one-year hiatus from coaching, Bill Belichick agreed to take over as the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. This will be the first coaching gig in the college ranks for the 72-year-old, who signed a five-year deal with the school.
NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic shared another stunning part of Belichick’s search for a coaching position. According to the report, Belichick actually reached out to the Jets about their HC vacancy despite his longtime beef with the AFC East organization:
“About two weeks ago, the New York Jets were informed (and were stunned to learn) that there was interest in their organization coming from none other than…Bill Belichick. The same Bill Belichick who, famously (or infamously, from the organization’s perspective), was the Jets’ head coach for less than a day 24 years ago, before scribbling on a piece of paper, “I resign as HC of the NYJ.” Belichick took great pleasure in torturing the Jets over his years as Patriots coach — and even more so in the past year as a TV analyst.
For months, Belichick’s inner circle quietly conducted informal conversations with a few teams, testing the waters. A very small circle of people in the Jets building were made aware of his interest, though I was told no meeting or formal conversation ever happened because the UNC opportunity popped up. So, in the end, none of the talks — with the Jets or any other NFL team — turned into anything serious, and now North Carolina is Chapel Bill.”
Belichick was let go by the New England Patriots in January, following a second straight losing and non-playoff season. The Atlanta Falcons were the only team to interview him in the 2024 NFL HC hiring cycle, but they hired Raheem Morris for the role.
It’s just funny that people from Bill Belichick’s camp reached out to the Jets to express interest in the Head Coaching job… Woody Johnson was prob like, “Nah, we want winners here!”

As Russini noted, the rivalry between Belichick and the Jets dates back to 2000, when he unexpectedly resigned as their HC to jump for the archrival Patriots. That move continues to haunt the Jets to this day, as the Patriots went on to win six Super Bowls during Belichick’s tenure.
Bill Belichick’s NFL Career May Not Be Done Just Yet
When Belichick accepted the UNC coaching job, fans naturally assumed that he was giving up on returning to the NFL. But it’s important to note that the final two years of his contract aren’t guaranteed, and that UNC has a $1 million buyout option if his deal is terminated after July 1 of next year.

Bill Belichick, the mastermind behind six Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots, has traded the NFL sidelines for the college football scene. On Wednesday, the University of North Carolina made waves by naming Belichick as its new head football coach.
This surprising move has left fans and analysts buzzing: how will the 72-year-old NFL legend transition to college coaching? Let’s break it down.
A Bold Hire For UNC
This hire also brings NFL experience into the college ranks, with veteran executive Michael Lombardi joining as general manager of UNC football. Lombardi, who worked with Belichick at the Patriots, Browns, and Raiders, adds decades of front-office expertise to the program. Together, they aim to rejuvenate the Tar Heels.
Why Bill Belichick Made The Move?
Belichick’s departure from the NFL came after a 24-year tenure with the Patriots, where he cemented his legacy. Despite interviewing for positions like the Atlanta Falcons head coaching job, he chose an unconventional path to Chapel Hill. His decision seems rooted in a personal connection to college football.
“I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times,” Belichick said. “I have always wanted to coach in college, and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

Belichick’s statement shows his excitement for this new chapter, blending his legendary coaching acumen with the opportunity to shape young athletes.
Challenges Ahead: NIL, Transfer Portal, And College Culture
Belichick steps into college football during a period of upheaval. The transfer portal allows players to move between programs with unprecedented freedom, while NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals offer athletes new income opportunities. These changes have shifted the balance of power in college sports, giving players more leverage than ever before.
Belichick’s strict, disciplined coaching style, lauded in the NFL, may face resistance in this environment. Tom Brady, his former quarterback, hinted at this potential friction, noting that Belichick’s demanding methods might not align with the mindset of today’s college athletes.
Bill Belichick’s Vision For UNC Football
Belichick has outlined a clear vision for his college program, emphasizing a professional approach. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, he said: “If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL. It would be a professional program… an education that would get the players ready for their career after football.”
This philosophy aligns with his NFL roots, focusing on preparing athletes for life on and off the field. Belichick’s holistic approach includes teaching time management, discipline, and life skills—qualities he believes will benefit players regardless of their football futures.
Will His NFL Methods Work In College?
Adapting to college football requires more than just strategy. Bill Belichick’s aggressive coaching style must resonate with players balancing academic pressures and NIL obligations. His football IQ is unparalleled. He may need some adjustments to fit the college game. However, his ability to build winning cultures could give UNC an edge.
Freddie Kitchens, the current run game coordinator and tight ends coach, will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming Fenway Bowl on December 28. This brief transition period allows Belichick to observe and plan his next steps.
