The Los Angeles Lakers are entering the 2024-25 NBA season with a mix of hope and uncertainty. Under the leadership of new head coach JJ Redick, the team is focused on building chemistry and enhancing their performance, aiming to compete at a higher level.

However, recent ESPN power rankings have placed the Lakers 13th among 16 teams considered realistic championship contenders. The Lakers currently have just a 1.5% chance of winning the NBA championship and a 4.0% chance of reaching the Finals.

Two seasons ago, the Los Angeles Lakers revamped their roster by moving on from the Russell Westbrook experiment. They chose to surround LeBron James and Anthony Davis with players who could shoot and defend. This strategy led to a strong finish of 18 wins and 9 losses, great playoff performances, and a run to the Western Conference Finals.

Last season, after struggling to maintain a .500 record, the Lakers found success by incorporating Austin Reaves, D’Angelo Russell, and Rui Hachimura alongside their stars. They finished the season with a 22-10 record and showed strong offensive play, although they were once again eliminated by the Nuggets in the playoffs.

Despite the excitement surrounding J.J. Redick’s hiring, the Lakers face significant challenges. They have yet to win a preseason game, suffering losses to the Timberwolves and Suns. While starters like LeBron and Davis have shown promise, the inconsistency of the bench raises concerns about the team’s depth and overall success this season.

The star duo can’t carry the team alone, and improved performances from supporting players or potential roster changes before the trade deadline are essential.

Los Angeles Lakers Seek Development And Cohesion Amidst Tough Competition

The Los Angeles Lakers’ roster remains largely unchanged, so they will need to focus on developing younger players and increasing their three-point attempts to improve. They must also emphasize offensive rebounding, as they struggled in that area last season.

Now, under Redick, the Lakers plan to start strong with a lineup that has previously outscored opponents by 6.9 points per 100 possessions. This group combines shooting, playmaking, and defensive skills, allowing them to excel in certain areas, particularly around the rim. However, the competition is tough.

Other teams, like the Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies, have their own issues, but most experts believe that the Lakers’ current roster isn’t strong enough to compete with top teams like the Celtics, Knicks, and Nuggets.

Despite these challenges, there is optimism about the Lakers’ chances for growth and improvement, especially with better health. However, LeBron remains cautious and stresses the importance of daily effort rather than setting overly ambitious expectations.

In an ideal scenario, Redick’s fresh approach could lead to a more cohesive team. If Davis excels defensively and Reaves becomes a consistent scorer, the Los Angeles Lakers could achieve over 50 wins and contend for a championship once again.
