However, his need to die confused the fans a little bit as he could have easily killed himself by jumping into the sea.
But there is a perfect explanation as to why Kaido could not die in the sea.
The main antagonist of the Wano arc, Kaido has been deemed as one of the greatest villains in the history of One Piece. Ever since Kaido’s character was officially introduced in One Piece, his need to kill himself was greatly emphasized within the storyline. Kaido’s immense strength and power made it impossible for him to die, which is why he wanted to kill himself, but even then he failed. This led to a lot of confusion about Kaido’s character and also revealed a plot hole that was left by Oda.
One Piece fans had the general idea that as Kaido is a Devil Fruit user, he can easily jump into the sea and let the Devil Fruit’s weakness take care of his problem. But the Devil Fruit itself became the explanation about why Kaido didn’t use the sea to kill himself.
Kaido’s Need To Die in One Piece
One of the unique traits of Kaido’s character was that he had a warrior mentality and believed that the only way to resolve issues was on the battlefield. This is why he considered dying on a battlefield as a glorious moment, but his unprecedented power didn’t allow him to live this glorious moment.
Kaido was deemed the Strongest Creature in the One Piece world, and because of this title, it was quite clear that there were very few characters who would face the wrath of the former Emperor. Thus, dying on a battlefield was not an option for him, and this led to his decision to kill himself. This way, he could have achieved the glory of death.

This is one of the main reasons why Kaido was jealous of Whitebeard and Oden as they faced their death head-on. It also explains why Kaido was excited to fight a battle against Luffy because he had a belief that Luffy might be the one who would take him down and grant his wish of getting a glorious death on the battlefield.
The Plot Hole About Kaido’s Death in One Piece
When the storyline of Kaido wanting to die was introduced in One Piece, fans were a little confused as the ways he used to kill himself were too unnecessary. He could have easily achieved death by jumping into the sea because of his Devil Fruit powers, but it was not as easy as it sounds.

Kaido’s Devil Fruit is the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, which translates to Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon. Thus, even though his Devil Fruit’s weakness would have taken away his ability to swim, he would have been able to breathe underwater because of his Fish-Fish fruit, making it impossible for him to die.
This in a way explains the genius of Eiichiro Oda as a manga creator. He kept these little details in mind and wrote Kaido’s character according to that, thus making him one of the greatest villains in the One Piece universe.
