The Lions beat the Bears 23-20 on Thanksgiving, but Detroit linebacker Jack Campbell sparked controversy with a late low hit on quarterback Caleb Williams in that game.

Lions star wide receiver Amon Ra St. Brown revealed Dan Campbell told the Detroit Lions defense to strike Williams in that game for a good reason.

St. Brown stated his head coach had a plan to get after Williams ahead of the game due to his habit of cutting back in from the sideline.

“The craziest part is before the game, in our team meeting, Dan was talking to us and was showing us clips of Caleb going out of bounds, going back in, going back in, going out,” St. Brown said. “He said, ‘No, you don’t.’ The beginning of it was, ‘No, you don’t,’ and then it was clips of him doing that. (Campbell) said, ‘I already warned the refs; the refs already know.’

So when it happened in the game, I’m like, I already knew there was no flag because he was about to go out of bounds, came back in. Jack hit his ass, everyone was like, ‘Yeah.’ All the bears were like, ‘What the? That’s a flag.’ We’re like, ‘Bro, he literally went out and came back in and took it.’”

The game was chippy, with a total of 14 penalties getting called and multiple players on both sides going down due to injury.

Caleb Williams luckily avoided injury when Lions linebacker Jack Campbell tackled him awkwardly.

Williams came back on the field on the following play and delivered a strike to wide receiver Keenan Allen for a touchdown.

Williams finished the day with 256 yards and three touchdowns.

Caleb Williams ‘Didn’t Appreciate’ Hit by Lions’ Campbell

Caleb Williams now knows that the Detroit Lions were most definitely gunning for him during their Thanksgiving game.

The Chicago Bears quarterback took the hit in the third quarter last Thursday and would need to make his way to the blue medical tent.

Williams reflected postgame about how “funky” the play was.

“Yeah, I—that play was funky. Just put it that way. I don’t really—you know, I didn’t really appreciate the play. He just kind of dove straight at my knee. So I didn’t really get that. Definitely kind of frustrated about that one, just ’cause you know, whatever. Yeah, knee’s good. Nothing wrong with it. Think I just got a bruise. But the play was—the play was funky.”

If Williams wants to avoid a potential injury in the future, he got a pretty good reminder to always go out of bounds and not take huge hits.
