Fans react to prize money controversy
Caitlin Clark is the new WNBA’s super star.
WNBA fans were disappointed when they found out that Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark wouldn’t be participating in the All-Star 3-point contest. However, their disappointment lessened when they learned that it was actually Caitlin herself who declined the invitation to take part in the event.
But now, fans are upset again after finding out the prize money for the 3-point shootout. According to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) excerpt shared by WNBA reporter Matt Ellentuck, participants of the contest are set to receive $1,030 each, with the winner earning $2,575.
Caitlin Clark makes WNBA history with first triple-double by a rookie, fans celebrate wildly
Many fans expressed their discontent with the prize money, with some speculating that it might be the reason why Caitlin and other players turned down the opportunity. One fan commented, “The real reason Caitlin and Sabrina declined the 3 point contest is that the WNBA couldn’t afford to pay them when they win.”
Another fan pointed out, “There is a LOT more that is seriously wrong & unprofessional in the @WNBA than a 3 Point Contest Payout. Caitlin Clark made the right choice & it was NOR because of the $2,575.”

Fans question fairness for players
Some supporters also highlighted the disparity between player compensation and the revenue they generate for the league. One supporter remarked: “cc had the option to win $2,000 (when she already makes millions) or rest gosh can’t imagine how hard that decision must have been for her when is all the millions of $$ in revenue generated by cc for wnba translate into compensation for the female players.”
The dissatisfaction among fans was palpable, with many concluding that the prize money was a significant factor in players declining the invitation.

However, there was a twist in the story when WNBA Players Association president Nneka Ogwumike announced that Aflac, an American insurance company, had decided to sponsor the event by awarding the winner an additional $55,000. This unexpected turn of events brought a sense of relief and excitement to fans and players alike.
Overall, while initial disappointment and frustration were evident among fans, the subsequent announcement of Aflac’s sponsorship brought hope and optimism for the future of women’s basketball in the WNBA.
