Are the Hawkeyes without Caitlin Clark overrated? Fans tear down team after loss to Michigan St.
Head coach Jen Jensen is not convincing a section of the fan base despite the team’s positive record.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are still adjusting to life without Caitlin Clark.
Life after Caitlin Clark is not easy. If you don’t believe it, ask head coach Jen Jensen, who has yet to earn the respect of the fans, despite her Iowa Hawkeyes winning their first eight games of the season and being currently 9-2, ranked 10th in the Big Ten conference.
Jensen took over the Hawkeyes helm at the end of the 2023-2024 season after coach Lisa Bluder retired and Clark declared to the WNBA Draft. Since then, the new helmswoman has dedicated herself to leading a team that has missed its star player for the past four seasons.
The season has not gone badly. In addition to the positive record, crowds continue to fill Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and Lucy Olsen has done a great job filling the spot left vacant by Clark. However, something seems to be missing from her team, and its most recent loss earned it strong criticism from some netizens.
Is Iowa overrated?
On Sunday night, the Hawkeyes lost to the Michigan State Spartans 68-66. Olsen was far from her usual level, with just 13 points-six less than her average this season-so Hannah Stuelke had to carry the team on her shoulders.
Despite the close score, netizens were all over the team. One particularly revealing comment on X (formerly Twitter) reads, “Most Overrated Teams 1. Iowa 2. Nebraska 3. Tennessee 4. Iowa St 5. NC State.”
Not all fans agree, however. Many came to the defense of both Iowa and Tennessee, sparking a war of comments among netizens. In the end, the consensus seems to be that Iowa, ranked No. 21 in the nation, is right where it belongs.

Despite a rough night on Sunday, Iowa appears to be on the right track. Last October, at Big 10 Media Day, Jensen said, “We all understand that we have to turn that page,” referring to Clark and Bluder’s departure, and they are doing exactly that.
With just 12 of 41 games played, the season is too young to know what lies ahead for the team. If Jensen, Olsen, and Stuelke can overcome the criticism and internet trolls, there’s no doubt the team will weather this transition successfully.
