Recently, ABC’s “The View” broke out into chaos when Republican Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) discussed criticisms about efforts in the Democratic party to install Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee in light of Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 race last month. The panelists on the talk show clashed with Sununu’s view on the matter.
Many have criticized Kamala Harris for stepping in as the presumptive Democratic nominee as subverting the Democratic process that selected Joe Biden as the candidate. Gov. Sununu stressed that voters explicitly chose Biden. “They voted for Biden to be president, and it wasn’t like it was sent to the convention, and then the delegates had a choice or anything like that, a couple elites,” he said.
However, co-host Sunny Hostin jumped in, arguing that this didn’t matter because Harris was technically on the ballot alongside Biden while claiming the vice president had secured 2,000 delegates. Sununu then pointed out the Democratic pressure for Biden to drop out of the race after many within the party lost faith in him as their candidate following the disastrous performance in the debate against former president Donald Trump.
Panelist Whoopi Goldberg stated this was false while commenting that “the other choices decided she was the best choice.” Co-hosts Joy Behar and Hostin maintained that the delegates had decided that Kamala Harris would be the party’s best choice. Goldberg further opined, “Newsom said I’m not going to challenge this. People decided who would have gone in to challenge said no, we’re not going to challenge her.”
Employing their logic, Sununu reversed the scenario and illustrated a hypothetical situation in which the same thing transpired within the Republican Party where another GOP leader could replace Trump. He pointed out what would happen if Republicans said, “We’re just going to install Nikki Haley now.” The conservative governor added, “”That would be awful, because the voters have to decide.”
Behar asked why that would be such a bad proposition as she expressed excitement over the prospect of two women running for president. Sununu fired back maintaining that “voters need to decide, not elites.” Goldberg took issue with the term “elites,” urging the governor to “stop calling them elites.” Hostin chimed in, “They did vote. They did vote. They voted for Harris as vice president.”
Last month, Biden announced his withdrawal from the race on X, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
