Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky had an impressive rookie season, earning a spot on the All-WNBA Rookie Team and receiving a vote for Rookie of the Year. Despite her many accomplishments, including leading the league in rebounds per game and setting a record for consecutive double-doubles, she faced a lot of criticism about her skills and playing style.

In a recent episode of her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel,” Reese spoke with NBA legend Dwyane Wade about the negative comments she has received. While many recognize her outstanding rebounding ability, some critics call her a “rebound merchant,” suggesting that she gets her statistics mainly by grabbing her own missed shots.

Angel Reese responded to these claims, saying, “When I came into the league, I just wanted to be able to grow. And luckily, I was really really good at one specific thing, which was rebounding. And I knew I had to tighten up on my offense.

Reese pushed back against her critics, asking why opponents don’t box her out more effectively: “But so many people critique me because I was a great rebounder. And sometimes, like, why don’t y’all box me out? How come y’all don’t box me out?” This question highlights a key point—rebounding involves teamwork and strategy, not just individual effort.

Angel Reese’s Dominance on the Boards Despite Shooting Struggles

Although Reese struggled with her shooting, especially around the basket—hitting only 44.5% from within five feet—her rebounding remained exceptional. To put this in perspective, elite players like A’ja Wilson and Nneka Ogwumike shot 65.1% and 66.9%, respectively, from the same range.

Still, Reese led the league in rebounds per game, averaging 13.1. Even though her season ended early due to a wrist injury, Reese’s achievements are remarkable. She was named a WNBA All-Star and became the fastest player in league history to reach 20 double-doubles.

Critics may have their opinions, but Angel Reese’s impact on the court is undeniable. The Chicago sensation has already made her mark, and she’s here to stay, continuing to grow and improve with each passing season. With her talent and determination, her future looks even brighter, promising to leave an even greater legacy in the years to come.
