And the Chiefs have seen encouraging signs from Kelce’s backup this season.
Noah Gray, 25, is in his fourth season with the Chiefs having been drafted in the fifth round in 2021.
He signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract extension in September and is starting to prove his credentials as a top tight end.
Gray caught two touchdown passes in Sunday’s defeat against the Buffalo Bills.
It was the first multi-touchdown game of his career.
And Gray now has as many scores in 2024 as Kelce.
Kelce has caught 62 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns this year.
Gray, meanwhile, has 23 catches for 249 yards and two scores.
One Chiefs fans labeled Gray, “He is a great backfill for Travis when he retires.”
Another commented, “Our best tight end I fear.”
While a third posted, “Congratulations, Noah! How exciting for you in your career.”
Gray is well on track to beat the 305 yards and two touchdowns he recorded last season.
He has won two Super Bowl rings with Kansas City as a bit-part player.
Kansas City lost their first game of the season on Sunday in Buffalo.
Fans weren’t happy with Kelce, who had just two catches for eight yards.
Head coach Andy Reid sent a message to his team after the loss.
“The margin between winning and losing is small and that starts with me,” Reid said.
“It’s a great game to learn from for some of our young guys.
“The main thing is they’re a good team and if you have mistakes they get capitalized on.
“We have got to learn from it and take something out of it to make us better down the road.”
