Jordan Chiles

One of the greatest Romanian gymnasts of all-time has had her say on the decision to strip the United States’ Jordan Chiles of her bronze medal after previously calling out the mental health impact on the athletes.

Chiles took bronze in the floor exercise after Team USA appealed that her difficulty score was graded too low, and whilst this was correct, it turns out they had filed their appeal four seconds after the 60-second limit expired.

As a result, on August 10 the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Ana Barbosu should have taken third and the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) later ratified the ruling by switching them around.

So, Nadia Comaneci who slammed the IGF’s initial ruling and the impact it could have had on Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea‘s mental health, has reacted to the CAS decision and victory for Romanian gymnastics.

“Proud of you ladies… you make the sport shine,” Comaneci wrote to X.com, formerly Twitter, speaking to Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea after becoming one of the most vocal critics against the IGF.

Chiles reacts to decision

Chiles initially scored a 13.666, placing her below both the Romanian athletes but it turned out that her difficulty score was one point too low.

When the point was applied, she was promoted to a 13.766 putting her ahead of her fellow gymnasts by 0.066.

She then celebrated the moment by bowing down to Rebeca Andrade after the Brazilian won gold, along with her teammate, Simone Biles.

However, she expressed her sadness at the decision by CAS and later the FIG and said she would not be online on social media for the foreseeable future.

“I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you,” Chiles posted to Instagram.

Comaneci calls for all three to share the medal

Comaneci also called for all three gymnasts to share the bronze medal, possible based on Olympics precedent, after it appeared that Maneca-Voinea‘s out-of-bounds points deduction was incorrectly applied.

Replays showed the 17-year-old from Constanta, by the Black Sea, seemed to be clearly within the bounds of the floor meaning her .100 penalty shouldn’t have ever been there to begin with.

“That will be the perfect decision 3 bronze medals for the ladies,” Comaneci added online after Romania reportedly offered to share the medal for all three gymnasts, seemingly admitting Chiles wasn’t to blame for the situation.
