The Chicago Sky’s 2024 season may have ended, but the team’s players are speaking out about a different kind of battle they’ve faced all year-harassment and abuse from fans.
As their season wrapped up with a disheartening 87-54 loss to the Connecticut Sun, Angel Reese teammates revealed the emotional toll that bigotry, racism, and constant online hate have taken on them.
“It’s the worst it’s ever been,” players lamented, with guard Dana Evans offering a candid account of the emotional turmoil they endured. “I’ll be honest, it was tough. We’re professionals, and we know how to play this game, but when you have people bashing you who are supposed to be your supporters, it feels like a slap in the face.”
Evans expressed how “disgusting”the harassment had become, forcing her to strengthen her mental resilience for the future. “This season challenged my mental to another level. I feel like I’m going to be so much better next season, mentally prepared for everything.”
All they want is to play
Sky forward Isabelle Harrison didn’t hold back either, addressing the disturbing racism and bigotry she faced on social media. “I’ve never experienced this much hate and harassment in my life,” Harrison said emotionally.
“You just want to play basketball. But people tag you in their hateful comments, create narratives about you-it’s hurtful.” She emphasized how the constant negativity had affected her ability to focus on the game, adding, “You get so much support, but when there’s so much negativity… you just have to block it out.”
It wasn’t the season they expected
The Sky, one of the most-followed teams this season largely due to the attention surrounding WNBA Rookie of the Year candidate Angel Reese, ended their season with a disappointing 13-27 record, missing out on the playoffs. Despite their struggles on the court, the emotional battles off the court seem to have left an even deeper scar.
With the growing popularity of women’s basketball, players hope new fans will also bring positivity, rather than the hate that has marred their 2024 campaign. For now, the Sky are ready to regroup and return stronger next season-both physically and mentally.
