We won’t have WNBA action until April, but the college season is in full swing. This weekend, Juju Watkins and the USC Trojans suffered their first loss of the season to Hannah Hidalgo’s undefeated No. 6 Notre Dame. Watkins finished with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists, but was outshined by Hidalgo, who finished with 24 points, six rebounds, eight assists and most importantly the win. Despite the loss, Watkins’ growing fame in the sports world was evident throughout the weekend.
This past Saturday, before her nationally televised game, the first episode of the six-part docuseries “On the Rise: JuJu Watkins” premiered on NBC and Peacock. The documentary explores Juju’s life and is produced by LeBron James’ company, with LeBron himself appearing in the series and trailer. Not only that, there was also a moment when a peculiar smell came into the arena and it was Snoop Dogg who was wearing a jacket in USC colors with Watkins’ name and number on the front and back.
NBA Legend Compares Juju Watkins to Caitlin Clark
Additionally, Juju was mentioned on former player Carmelo Anthony‘s podcast. Anthony, who ranks tenth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, discussed Watkins’ potential with ESPN reporter Monica McNutt. McNutt even suggested that Juju could surpass Caitlin Clark, sparking a heated debate among Clark’s loyal fans. The show also included a comparison of Clark’s and Watkins’ playing styles. Melo commented that Watkins plays with an aggressive, attack-first mentality similar to his own, while noting that Clark’s offensive repertoire is more developed. McNutt’s comments, however, were the real talking point online, as Clark’s supporters passionately defended their favorite star.

Adding to the buzz, someone in the show mentioned a meme that circulated in social media, comparing the arrival of Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark in the WNBA to the arrival of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in the NBA. It went on to suggest that Juju could be their Michael Jordan. While an entertaining exaggeration, the comparison overlooks the fact that neither Clark nor Reese have yet to achieve anything substantial at the professional level. Still, as memes go, it got people talking.

So far in five games played this season, Watkins is averaging 22.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.4 steals and 2.6 blocks. But Watkins career started to make noice since the 19-year-old showed her all-around talent last season as a freshman, averaging 27.1 points on 40.1% shooting, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists. If she continues at this pace, she will very likely break Clark’s scoring record. With at least two years left at USC, there’s plenty of time to see if she can do what Clark couldn’t – win a national championship. Let’s give her time, but her career looks promising and she’s being well advised.
USC will take on Seton Hall tomorrow at the Women’s Acrisure Holiday Invitational in Palm Desert, California. The most intriguing prospect of the season, however, would undoubtedly be a potential showdown between Juju Watkins and Paige Bueckers before the UConn star enters the WNBA as the projected first overall pick in the next WNBA Draft.

A new set of photos of her showing her assets off has popped up online ahead of the weekend, with one of the accounts posting asking, “Are you a hockey fan?”
