The 24 best players in the WNBA plying their trade together under one roof on a historic night. Sounds like a dream? Well, this is what the WNBA All-Star game between the Team WNBA and Team USA for the Paris Olympics looked like. Hence, it was natural for fans and viewers to admire this one-of-a-kind competition. Even Team USA’s coach Cheryl Reeve couldn’t shy away from admitting that it was “one of the greatest spectacles.” Post that, Taurasi was asked to share her views on Reeve’s comments. And she couldn’t deny how the WNBA saw massive growth this season.

Taurasi was present during a pregame conference with Griner on Sunday when she was asked to take cognizance of her Team USA head coach Reeve’s comments and share her take on it. The 42-year-old congratulated the league for its power-packed performance which has helped it grow exponentially in the past few months.

“I mean, look, this moment we’re in right now, in sports, in the WNBA, is uncharted waters for a lot of us and it’s, it’s pretty amazing to be a part of it. Like coach Reeve said she’s been in this game longer than anyone she’s coached the greats, been around the greats and I think it’s always nice to see the game improving, like it is right now. And you know I think you know if we could ever get this game overseas that would be pretty cool too,” Taurasi stated, via the pregame conference.

The WNBA has been exploring never-seen-before territories. The Sunday game in itself was an example of that since it drew over 16,000 spectators. This was a record-breaking number since 2007 when the All-Star game had an attendance of 19,487 as per Statistica. The game had several stars plying their trade on the same hardwood and also presented a gripping contest.

Reeve has been the head coach for the Minnesota Lynx since 2010. Hence, she has witnessed a lot of players participating in the W and how the league and viewers responded then. With the addition of rookies such as Reese and Clark, the league has suddenly caught pace and even most of the regular season games are also a sellout. Reeve, on the other hand, has won the Championship title four times and has coached in a WNBA All-Star game an equal number of times. Therefore, her comments needed to be taken seriously.

Cheryl Reeve shares her take on the “historic” night

Reeve humorously admitted that such a star power hasn’t been seen before and would definitely hinder mentors like her in “coaching the team because of what’s happening.” It is going to be “one of the greatest spectacles, I think, in the history of our league,” were Reeve’s comments. Thus, Reeve subtly enunciated that the league is going into a new era. And this is clear from the way the WNBA officials are ready to invest a whopping $50 million over the course of the next two years to provide charter flights for the stars.

This wouldn’t have been possible if the league hadn’t grown in its revenue. Plus, Team USA was mostly comprised of veterans while the WNBA All-Star team had rookies. Thus, the game was one of a kind in the league.
