Ex-Kansas City Chiefs star insists he helped carry Patrick Mahomes to 2022 NFL MVP award

Marquez Valdes-Scantling claims he is why Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes won their NFL MVP awards shortly after the wide receiver signed for Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills after being let go by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 29-year-old was the 174th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft but has managed to go on to become a two-time Super Bowl champion in 2022 and 2023 after spending four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
It’s not often a receiver gets a chance to work with quarterbacks as talented as Rodgers and Mahomes and it appears their successes have got to his head as he declared himself responsible for their MVP awards by making “big plays”.
“I’ve helped them elevate their games in different facets,” Valdes-Scantling told Go Long. “I helped Aaron win a couple MVPs. I helped Pat win MVP, a couple Super Bowls. My resume speaks for itself, too.
“Ain’t a one-way thing, man. I put up some big numbers with these guys. Made some big plays for these guys. It all works out on both ends. And it’s not a fluke. It’s happened everywhere.”
Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP in 2018 and 2022, was on fire in the latter season as he threw for 5250 yards, 41 touchdowns and 435 completions as he inspired the Chiefs to Super Bowl glory against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In that same season, Valdes-Scantling made 42 receptions from 81 targets for 687 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season on a three-year $30m deal in Missouri alongside Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Despite falling somewhat out of favor compared to previous seasons in 2023, Valdes-Scantling still had a role to play in another AFC Conference Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens as he caught a late 32-yard Mahomes pass.

With the Chiefs leading 17-10, the play allowed his team to run down the clock to book their place in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers, where he came in with another important play by scoring a touchdown in the 25-22 win.
However, on February 28, he was let go by the organization but it hasn’t taken him long to find a new place to ply his trade as he links up with Josh Allen at the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal which was agreed on May 14, 2024.
