Monterey High School’s Aaliyah Chavez just had one of the best games of her senior season in high school. Chavez scored at will earlier on Thursday, dropping 53 points, including nine three-pointers, on the opening day of the Caprock Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
She has already made a name for herself as the highest-touted recruit in the Class of 2025. With performances like the one she had on Dec. 26, she continues to strengthen her reputation as she nears the end of her high school career.
However, some fans expressed discontent on social media about Chavez playing the entire game on Thursday despite the lopsided score and the weakness of the opposition.
“Why she still in up 50…,” one user questioned on @overtimeselect’s Instagram post.
“I guess I’m old school. The opposition was obviously over matched. The gap in talent between good and bad in prep girls hoops is super drastic. Congratulations, but nothing to get hype about,” another shared.

“Look at score tho it’s no challenge,” a user pointed out.
Responding to critics, many were swift to come to the defense of the high school standout.
“Why everyone hating on a kid,” one user wrote with laughing emojis.

“Man this young lady is unreal! Keep doing it young baller!” another posted.
“It’s because they don’t have a daughter to brag about. I never had a child who out performed in sports like that but I tell you one thing, she works hard. I’ll support her anytime, anywhere and any day,” a user explained.
No matter how the public spins the narrative on Chavez, the 5-foot-11 point guard is the No. 1-ranked recruit in the nation and has already garnered offers from several top programs. Only time will tell if she can replicate the same success in college.
Recruitment race for Aaliyah Chavez heats up
With Aaliyah Chavez’s stock rising, she had been linked to a potential commitment to the LSU Tigers under Kim Mulkey’s guidance. However, as reported earlier in September, the powerhouse program is no longer in discussions with Chavez, citing her over $1 million NIL value as a significant factor.
Since then, speculation has grown that the Texas Longhorns may secure the budding star, given her recent visit to the campus and their readiness to meet her NIL value. Other colleges like the Oklahoma Sooners are also in the mix for Chavez, adding excitement to the recruitment race.
VIDEO: A’ja Wilson Sends Social Media Into A Frenzy After Claiming She Would Beat Josh Hart In A 1v1
Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has emerged as one of the most prominent figures in women’s basketball. Her outstanding achievements and dominant performances on the court have boosted her confidence in her skills. However, this confidence has recently caused her some trouble, as NBA fans criticized her for a recent statement she made.
In a recent episode of the “Roommates” show, Wilson stunned both the NBA and WNBA by claiming that she could defeat New York Knicks star Josh Hart in a one-on-one matchup. Additionally, she predicted that the final score would be 11-8.
“Score would be 11-8, me. I’m not saying you gonna go scoreless, 8 to 11 is pretty solid. So, what do you think it’ll be, Josh?” Wilson said.
Although Josh and Wilson both had a good laugh during their conversation, Wilson’s comment stirred up the basketball community. “She’d lose 11-0 w him only playing w his offhand,” one fan said.
