It has been nearly two months since Teresa Weatherspoon‘s surprising departure as head coach of the Chicago Sky after just one season.
The move, which came as a shock to many, including Weatherspoon herself, has left lingering questions about the circumstances surrounding her firing.
While the team has moved forward with new head coach Tyler Marsh preparing for the 2025 season, Weatherspoon recently reflected on her exit during a media event for the upcoming Unrivaled League.
Weatherspoon, a WNBA Hall of Famer, admitted she didn’t anticipate being let go. “It wasn’t a decision I saw coming,” she said in remarks reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Reflecting on Her Time with the Sky
Despite her unexpected dismissal, Weatherspoon expressed no regrets about her tenure in Chicago.
She hinted at challenges and changes she navigated during her time with the team, suggesting there’s more to the story than what’s publicly known.
“You gotta know this and stand on it,” Weatherspoon said. “You’re not for everybody. I’m OK with that. I know the things I did. I know the things I helped change. I know the things I had to go through and what I stood through. I will do that again, over and over and over.”
Her leadership during the season reportedly made a lasting impact on players like Angel Reese, who was instrumental to the team’s efforts.
While Weatherspoon refrained from revealing specific details about her firing, her comments indicate that the experience shaped her professionally and personally.
A New Chapter Awaits
For now, Weatherspoon is focusing on her next endeavor: coaching in the inaugural season of the Unrivaled League, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament spearheaded by stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier.
The league begins in January and will run for three months, giving Weatherspoon a platform to continue showcasing her coaching abilities.
Looking ahead, Weatherspoon hasn’t ruled out a return to the WNBA. “That is to be seen,” she said when asked about the possibility.
“One thing about me is I don’t run from anything. I don’t hide from anything. I don’t have to answer anything. Because I know what I bring. I know how hard I worked. I know that the opportunity for me will come and I’ll be ready.”
With several teams, including the Dallas Wings, Washington Mystics, and Connecticut Sun, still searching for a head coach, Weatherspoon‘s name could surface as a potential candidate.
Her determination and confidence suggest she’s prepared to embrace whatever opportunity comes next.
