Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon

The Chicago Sky‘s recent decision to part ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon has caused quite a stir in the basketball world. While some have called the move harsh, there are underlying factors that may have contributed to this outcome.

ESPN analyst and former WNBA All-Star Chiney Ogwumike has added a new perspective to the discussion, pointing to the impact of star players on coaching expectations.

Heading into the season, Chicago made some high-profile roster moves, bringing in the No. 3 and No. 7 draft picks, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, as well as former All-Rookie Team member Chennedy Carter. These additions, particularly Reese, brought heightened excitement and a surge of new fans who immediately anticipated a strong playoff run.

However, Ogwumike suggests that the increased pressure to deliver results was unfairly placed on Weatherspoon.

Many fans, she noted, may not fully understand Weatherspoon‘s background and accomplishments, nor the challenges she faced as a coach.

Coming from a successful role as a developmental coach for the New Orleans PelicansWeatherspoon seemed well-suited to lead a young roster brimming with potential. However, things didn’t play out as expected.

“People expect winning in some ways because you have tremendous talent like Angel Reese making history,” Ogwumike said. “But the reality is, it’s very difficult to establish an identity with such a limited runway, just one year before the decision is made.

“This woman is a Hall of Famer, voted one of the Top 20 Players in WNBA history!”

Rawlinson’s statement

Chicago Sky co-owner Nadia Rawlinson issued a statement explaining the decision to let Weatherspoon go, citing the team’s struggles during the season-finishing with a 13-27 record and failing to make the playoffs-as key reasons for the change.

Former NFL star quarterback Brett Favre has taken a swipe at pop sensation Taylor Swift for political reasons ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.

The 11-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro is known to be a supporter of former President Donald Trump and has previously endorsed him.

He’s since taken a shot at Swift, who recently endorsed Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris following Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes informing everyone that he wouldn’t endorse a candidate.

“Good take by Mahomes,” he wrote in a tweet.

“I see a lot of celebs trying to influence their audience instead of letting the people think for themselves. If the best choice for them ain’t clear and they’re easily swayed by their fav pop artist, it’s not going to be a good thing.”
