Travis Kelce seems to be out of it in terms of football—outside of it, he’s living the dream by dating pop icon Taylor Swift and starring in TV shows while managing his podcast with brother Jason Kelce. Where he needs to contribute more is in his day job as the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

Before the Chiefs’ Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons, Kelce only caught four passes for 29 yards in the season’s opening two games. Those are not world-beating numbers considering his pedigree and the career he has had.

It was more of the same against the Falcons as well. After two-quarters of football at the Mercedez Benz Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, Travis accounted for just a solitary reception.

When the NBC camera panned at the Chiefs dugout, a dejected Travis Kelce sat in silence with his head hung in disappointment.

Beating the Falcons brought back the usual glow in his face,

but his personal stats were nothing to write home about. He ended the game with just four catches on five targets for 30 yards.

Andy Reid revealed the reason for Travis Kelce’s low reception record in the 2024 season

Kelce has been an easily recognizable face in football even before he started dating Taylor Swift. So, when people were quick to notice and point out his massive drop off from the grid.

It definitely raised a few eyebrows. Some speculated that Kelce’s head wasn’t in the game or highlighted his aging and slowing body as a cause for the low percentage of chances. Head coach Andy Reid dismissed both ideas.

Coach Reid said to look on the bright side. Even if the 34-year-old hasn’t had many catches to celebrate, he is doing his part as an extra body for the team.

[Other teams] have some things that they were attempting there. He’ll get his catches. It’s not that he’s slowing down or any of that… It’s just [that] teams focus on him—and kind of know he’s been Pat’s [Patrick Mahomes] go-to guy. What it’s done, though, is it’s allowed us to utilize the other guys around them.

The Chiefs offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, backed up coach Reid’s claims. Nagy said that it’s natural to look at the numbers and to overlook what Kelce does besides catching passes and scoring touchdowns.

You look at the numbers. You look at all that stuff with Travis. He knows who he is, We know who he is. When you have that, it’s important to know that.

Matt Nagy said

What matters most is that the Chiefs are 3-0 for the season and don’t look like slowing down anytime soon. Up next, they will face AFC East rivals the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in LA.
