Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) smiles after gabbing her tenth...

After 240 games, the historic 28thWNBA regular season came to a close yesterday, featuring six final matchups, including the Indiana Fever vs. Washington Mystics game, which set a WNBA attendance record with 20,711 fans at Capital One Arena. It was a fitting end to a season full of records, both on and off the court. Now comes the exciting part-the playoffs. We’ll see how far Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever can go, whether the Las Vegas Aces can achieve a three-peat, if the New York Liberty can live up to their regular-season dominance, or if there will be any unexpected surprises.

MVP Race in the WNBA

For most sportsbooks and those who watched the full season, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces is expected to win this season’s MVP, securing her third MVP award after an incredible season. Wilson became the first player to score over 1,000 points in a season (1,021) and set the highest PPG in WNBA history(26.9). She also recorded the most rebounds in a season (451), a record it looked like Angel Reese would achieve prior to her injury. Trailing behind Wilson in MVP voting are Napheesa Collier and rookie Caitlin Clark. Clark was asked about being in the MVP conversation and said, “It is definitely cool. Especially where I started the year, and then being able to figure it out. Now, entering game 40, it feels night and day from where I began.”

Indiana Fever and Clark faced doubts after starting the season 1-8, but they finished strong, winning nine of their last 14 games after the Olympics break. Clark’s stats speak volumes-she is a lock for Rookie of the Year, but her performance with the Fever has exceeded even the highest expectations. Clark led the entire WNBA in assists per game (8.4), set a record for most assists in a season (337), and holds the single-game assist record (19). She also led the league in three-pointers made (122), placing second all-time for most threes in a season. Yet, all this may not be enough to surpass Wilson’s performance, who is also the likely Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) after leading the league in blocks and be a threat in the paint.

As for Clark, she will almost certainly be named Rookie of the Year. Among rookies, she led nearly every category this season: points, assists, three-pointers, field goals, and steals. She became the first rookie to record a triple-double, doing so twice. Clark set rookie records for most points (769), assists (337) , and three-pointers (122) in a season, showing that no matter how much her game is analyzed, she remains unstoppable. This is just the beginning for Clark, and both her game and her fame are expected to grow.

Playoffs on the Horizon

The playoffs begin this Sunday, with the first round being a best-of-three series. The New York Liberty (32-8), the top team, will face the Atlanta Dream (8) in what looks like a routine win for New York. The winner will go on to play either the defending champions, Las Vegas Aces (4), who are chasing a three-peat, or the Seattle Storm (5) in what could be the closest series of the round. On the other side, the Minnesota Lynx (2) will face the Phoenix Mercury (7), which may be Diana Taurasi’s last game in the WNBA. The winner of this matchup will play either the Connecticut Sun (3) or Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever (6). For a fun fact, the first game of this season-and Clark’s career-was a Sun vs. Fever game, where Connecticut comfortably beat Indiana.
