In a recent interview, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy offered his perspective on Caitlin Clark’s comments about white privilege and people are analyzing the whole thing.

Clark, the standout rookie for the Indiana Fever, had made these remarks after being named Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year. She acknowledged her privilege while emphasizing the contributions and importance of investing in Black players in the WNBA.

Portnoy, while disagreeing with Clark’s remarks, provided a unique view. He noted that Clark has faced criticism, with some attributing her success to her race. “She was put in a tough spot,” Portnoy said.

“She said she deserves it. It has nothing to do with white privilege, but she’s in a league, and she’s had to deal with any time she’s been successful over the past year, two years, everyone’s tearing her down, saying, ‘Oh, it’s only because you’re white’,” he added.

Explaining what actually happened

In an attempt to contextualize her situation, Portnoy compared Clark to renowned African-American athletes such as Simone BilesSerena Williams, and Tiger Woods. He argued that their success was recognized for their exceptional talent, rather than their race.

Portnoy suggested that Clark’s acknowledgment of white privilege was an effort to address the ongoing conversation about race and equity in sports. He believed that her intention was to show awareness and support for her fellow athletes, even if it meant navigating a controversial topic.

Despite his disagreement, Portnoy understood the reasons behind her comments, given the scrutiny and challenges she faces. Clark’s recognition and her comments have sparked significant discussions about race and privilege in sports, highlighting the complexities athletes encounter both on and off the court.

Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink is one of the most accomplished young basketball stars in the country: she’s a former NCAA champion (2021, with Stanford Cardinal), a McDonald’s All-American (2020), and FIBA 3×3 World Cup MVP (2023).

Even though her rookie season in the WNBA was cut short due to a serious injury (a torn ACL after an awkard fall), the future looks very promising for the Princeton, New Jersey native. Off the court she’s been on a roll: she became New Balance’s first sponsored female basketball player in August 2023.
