Dandadan’s latest episode featured a homage to Shin Godzilla movie, but it still invited criticism over its usage of color grading.
SUMMARY
The action sequences in episode 9 was created in a green-yellow color graded manner, which fans did not take a liking to.
Many claimed that it hurt their eyes, while others claimed it was a reference to Godzilla’s origin from the atomic bomb.
On the other hand, the episode’s homage to Shin Godzilla with Nessie was iconic.
Dandadan has been serving one unique episode after another, and fans have been impressed with it for the most part. In episode 9, the anime debuted Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, which took almost everyone by surprise. In fact, the staff even went to extra lengths to include a Shin Godzilla reference.

It was a fun episode with a battle against Serpos, and the action sequences were also extremely well depicted. But fans did point out one thing that was a bit annoying about the episode, which has been a repetitive theme in the anime.
Dandadan‘s Green-Yellow Color Grading Received Negative Feedback

Dandadan has always used different color gradings in its battle sequences in the anime. The very first encounter with the Serpos has a blue color grading, while Momo and Okarun’s final battle with Turbo Granny used a red hue. Additionally, the Acrobatic Silky episode was created in a pinkish sequence. Similarly, episode 9 of Dandadan showed a green-yellow color tone.
But while fans have been appreciative of the usage of colors in Dandadan, the latest episode threw them off a bit. Some fans commented that the colors make the scene look like a radioactive lake. Some even claimed that the colors were too intense, and made their eyes hurt.
Dandadan has been brilliant with their color usage, but maybe it’s time to tone it down a bit? But maybe the scene was created with greater things in mind, especially with the addition of the Loch Ness monster who is a Shin Godzilla reference. In fact, the studio went as far as to include scientific methods in its attack.

Nessie’s debut was celebrated in the Dandadan manga, but Science SARU managed to take it up a notch. When Nessie launched a high-compression water blast, the scene felt clearly inspired by the movie Shin Godzilla. In the movie, the kaiju powers up before an attack and burns the surrounding landscape. Similarly, Nessie destroys multiple classrooms with its attack.
It seems like the anime studio is doing its best to make Dandadan as intriguing as possible with every episode. And their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Fans have loved the homage, and could clearly point out the inspiration for the scene.
While Dandadan has already become a beloved episode, the extra effort by Science SARU is making fans fall head over heels once again. This, in turn, will even attract manga-only readers due to how beautifully the anime recreates scenes. Previously, the beautifully animated tale of Acrobatic Silky’s tragedy also brought fans to tears and no one can wait for what lies ahead.
Dandadan manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
