The heights of One Piece characters might baffle you, but their romantic relationships will get you questioning Oda’s thought process even more.
SUMMARY
One Piece includes some of the most ridiculously tall people in anime but their romantic relationships make even less sense.
Whitebeard’s possible fling with Stussy was strange enough but Big Mom’s 41st husband is more horrifying.
Eiichiro Oda made characters tall to make them unique but didn’t account their love life when making them.
One Piece might be known for its exaggeratedly overpowered Devil Fruits but the freakishly large body proportions and height of some characters are also quite alarming. They can casually stand more than 10 feet tall without a problem. What’s even more ridiculous is some of the romantic pairing given to these tall characters. They’re almost always paired with people of average height or much shorter. Does Eiichiro Oda even consider how they look side-by-side when creating these couples in his head?

Fans might think of Otohime and Neptune when thinking about this height difference in romantic relationships of One Piece but there are couples even more puzzling. At least the two had a loving relationship but we know Big Mom never carried an ounce of love for her husbands, let alone a Tontatta or the One Piece equivalent of a dwarf. How did a 28-foot-tall woman ever have a relationship with someone that minuscule?
The Height Differences in One Piece Make No Sense

Romantic relationships in One Piece are often doomed by loss and tragedy but even the most beautiful stories couldn’t make fans overlook the insane height differences. This applies particularly to Kouzuki Oden at 12’6″ and Toki at 6’3″. Their love story was one of a kind in One Piece and yet their height difference caught the eye of fans more. Eiichiro Oda perhaps doesn’t think physical appearances matter in any kind of relationship as seen with couples who clearly didn’t love each other.Buckingham Stussy, a former Rocks Pirate, claims to be the lover of Edward Newgate and bore a child named Edward Weevil with the great Emperor. There’s no real confirmation of the two having a real relationship other than a panel in the manga where she’s on Whitebeard’s shoulder during their time with the Rocks Pirates. While her height during her prime would’ve been around 5’10”, if her clone is anything to go by, she’s currently only 2’3″ and comically small. It’s also hard to believe Whitebeard wouldn’t have taken in Weevil as one of his sons since the Emperor is a family man through and through.
The more horrifying height difference Oda has given us is Big Mom and an unknown dwarf that fathered Charlotte Normande. Considering the most prominent dwarf, Leo is only 9″ tall, her former husband must have been around the same height. Perhaps we’re being too close-minded and these relationships are more progressive than horrifying but it’s already hard to imagine Big Mom being with anyone.
What Is Eiichiro Oda Thinking With These Pairings?
The bizarre pairing of Big Mom and a Tontatta has created more ridiculous scenarios than logical retrospection on the relationship. Her marriage to him was nothing more than a marriage of convenience but how did Stussy and Whitebeard ever have a dalliance with that height difference? These pairings will never make sense, no matter how much you think about it.
Eiichiro Oda’s purpose with them isn’t logical but we know the ridiculous height of the taller characters is to make them visually unique. It’s a norm in the One Piece world so why would it matter when it comes to romantic relationships? It will still baffle fans but probably not more than the many mysteries in the series.
