Damar Hamlin’s emotions were on full display after nabbing his first career interception
Safety Damar Hamlin made good on his promise with an emotional career first, nabbing his interception against Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars in a blowout win
Damar Hamlin’s journey from his cardiac arrest continues, with the safety crossing one thing off his career to-do list: Nabbing his first interception.
With just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter in the Buffalo Bills’ marquee matchup against Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars, the star quarterback appeared to target receiver Brian Thomas Jr. under heavy duress. While the throw was aimed at Thomas, the ball sailed over his head and into the arms of Hamlin.
Hamlin then ran with the ball before eventually being taken out of bounds by the Jaguars defense. As he celebrated with his teammates, the arena exploded in joy, as the fans on hand took to the time congratulate Hamlin on his superb defensive effort.
Standing in the end zone, Hamlin was joined by the defense in celebration as fans showed the group with praise. In nabbing his first career interception, the 26-year-old safety made good on his promise of being known as more than just the player who had a near-death experience.
In mid-September, Hamlin spoke to NFL.com and shared his mindset as he tried to continue his career. “I don’t want to be just known as the player who lived,” Hamlin said. “My story is my story. It’s still being written. but I want to be known for my abilities as well. I’ve always had big goals on and off the field. I have so much more that I want to accomplish.”
What’s more, Hamlin noted how his cardiac arrest against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2023 will always be a part of who he is as a person and player. “People move on with their life and they think about it when they see me,” Hamlin continued.

“I can’t move on. It’s a part of me. I do still have flashbacks sometimes. And within my day-to-day, I definitely think about it. I’ve learned to appreciate those moments in my life. But when I play a game now, those three hours, I’m only thinking about football.”
Because of his experience, Hamlin mentioned how he is now looking at all options in his life, instead of focusing solely on football. “To give everybody some more perspective, I would just say, trust what you know and trust what got you here,” he said.
Hamlin’s recent journey showed his resolve though there are other accomplishments he wants to tick off his to-do list. Speaking at an event in Pittsburgh, Hamlin told attendees how he hopes to play long enough to retire as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I think ending my career, finishing, as a Pittsburgh Steeler would be a dream,” he said at the time. “I played at Pitt so you know I was in the stadium. I played at Heinz Field probably for like eight years straight between WPIAL championships and Pitt so a dream come true would be finishing my career as a Steeler.”
