Eagles star WR A.J. Brown expects to miss ‘a couple weeks’ with hamstring injury

A.J. Brown’s hamstring injury is going to keep him out for more than just a single game.
The Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver told ESPN on Monday night during Philadelphia’s stunning 22-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons that he expects to be out for “a couple weeks” with the injury.
It’s unclear how long Brown will be out, or if the Eagles are considering placing him on injured reserve.
Brown first appeared on the Eagles’ injury report Friday after his hamstring acted up in practice. He then missed Saturday’s practice, and the team officially ruled him out of Monday night’s game in Philadelphia on Sunday.
Brown had 1,456 receiving yards last season, which marked his second consecutive campaign with at least 1,400 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. The 27-year-old signed a three-year, $96 million contract extension with the team earlier this year. That deal, which briefly made him the highest paid wide receiver in the league, will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2029 season.
Brown shined for the Eagles in their season opener against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil last week. He had a team-high 119 receiving yards and a touchdown on five catches in the 34-29 win.
With Brown sidelined, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will likely turn more toward DeVonta Smith in his absence. Smith, who had 84 yards on seven catches in Philly’s win over the Packers, scored Philadelphia’s first touchdown on Monday night on a 7-yard catch in the second quarter. Smith finished with 76 yards on seven catches in the loss.
The Falcons, thanks to a wild game-winning drive from Kirk Cousins, stunned the Eagles to grab the one-point win on Monday night. Cousins led the Falcons 70 yards down the field in just 65 seconds before hitting Drake London for a 7-yard touchdown pass to seal the comeback win, which moved both teams to 1-1 on the season.
The Eagles will take on the New Orleans Saints next week in Louisiana.
San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to miss “a couple of weeks” due to a calf strain, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday.
If Samuel is out for only two weeks, putting him on injured reserve doesn’t need to be a consideration. Players on injured reserve must miss a minimum of four games, under NFL rules.
Samuel had eight receptions for 110 yards in San Francisco’s 23–17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. He suffered the calf strain late in the game, though it’s uncertain on which play he sustained the injury.
“He told me he thinks he did it when he caught — I think it was like the third-to-last play,” Shanahan explained, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “They had a blitz down in the red zone, he caught the hot route breaking in. He says he thinks he did it on that play. There was only like two or three plays after that play, though.”
After two games, Samuel leads the 49ers with 13 receptions for 164 yards. He’s also rushed for 13 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
Samuel joins Christian McCaffrey among injured players for the 49ers. The running back was placed on injured reserve last week with Achilles tendinitis and calf tightness.
As valuable as Samuel has been to the 49ers’ offense during his six seasons, he’s never played a full schedule of games. Last season, Samuel missed two games with a hairline fracture in his shoulder. In 2022, he was limited to 12 games due to a sprained MCL and sprained ankle.
For Week 3, the 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams, who will be without receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua for multiple games.
49ers QB Purdy makes honest four-word admission to Vikings DC Flores
Brock Purdy offered Brian Flores the best compliment a coach could ask for.
On the field after the 49ers’ 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, Purdy was approached by the Vikings defensive coordinator and offered an honest four-word review of the opposing coach’s defense.
“Your scheme is crazy,” Purdy told Flores on the field.
Flores’ defense not only held Purdy and the high-powered 49ers’ offense to just 17 points but also forced two turnovers on the star quarterback (one interception, one fumble) while recording six sacks.
Purdy and the 49ers’ offense struggled for most of the game, and it’s clear Flores’ scheme played a big role in San Francisco’s first loss of the season. And the 49ers recognize that.
Game recognize game.
