Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016 but has been vocal about wanting to return to the game.
The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback-turned-activist has not seen any professional football action since Jan. 1, 2017, but he has never stopped trying.
In the meantime, Kaepernick continues to build on his civil rights work, which was spurred by his decision to kneel during the National Anthem at the start of the 2016 season.
Just recently, Kaepernick and Nessa Diab appeared on CBS Mornings to promote their new children’s book “You are Free, You and Me.”
Gayle King asked the free agent QB if he’s still working out daily to play again or “make a point.”
“Both,” Kaepernick responded. “When I look at my career, it was 15 years of work and dedication before I ever stepped foot on an NFL field. To have that passion and chase it for that long, you don’t just give that up. You don’t just walk away.”

He made it clear that he “absolutely” wants everyone to know he still wants to play.
“There will never be an instance where I’m not ready, and there will never be an instance where, ‘Oh, it’s because he doesn’t want to anymore,’” Kaepernick added.
Colin Kaepernick Had An NFL Job Offer
In 2016, Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the playing of the USA’s national anthem prior to an NFL game in a protest against police brutality towards minorities, and he has never known peace since.
Once that NFL season was over, he had no clue that he would never play in the league again.
Despite everything, he had a chance to get back into the league, but not as a player.
Kaepernick had been offered to join the Los Angeles Chargers’ coaching staff, with his former coach, Jim Harbaugh.
Harbaugh alluded to potentially finding former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick a spot on his coaching staff for the 2024 season, but he took so long giving him an answer that he had to move on.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Kaepernick in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, which was Harbaugh’s first year as their head coach, so their relationship is evident.
Whether he works for the team down the line will truly be up to him.

Colin Kaepernick was in the house for Game 2 of the WNBA semifinals last night between the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty. And the former NFL quarterback was treated to quite a reception from the fans inside the Barclays Center.
While sitting courtside for the game — which the Liberty won, 88-84 — Kaepernick appeared on the jumbotron during a break in the action and was treated to a surprisingly warm reaction.
As he waved to the crowd and smiled, fans behind Colin Kaepernick could be seen cheering loudly for the highly-controversial athlete and activist.
We’re not sure exactly who Kaepernick was cheering for in this matchup, so we can’t say for certain whether he left the game a happy man or not.
Colin Kaepernick’s NFL Comeback Pursuit Continues
It’s been almost a decade since Colin Kaepernick last played in the NFL. We last saw him go 1-10 as the 49ers’ starting quarterback back in 2016. Since then, Kaepernick has been unable to land a spot on an NFL roster, thanks in large part to his strong political stance.

During that 2016 season, he sparked mass controversy across America when he kneeled during the national anthem in response to instances of police brutality against people of color. The act rubbed many people the wrong way, until the point where no NFL team wanted anything to do with the polarizing quarterback and the attention he brings.
Despite being away from the game for so long, Kaepernick continues to stay in shape in hopes of getting one more shot at playing quarterback in the NFL. It remains a long shot, but that won’t stop him from trying.
