“Blood tests were taken, and a gender test was taken, as it was during the Women’s World Championship in 2022 in Istanbul. On 17 May 2022, the blood tests were taken by a lab in Istanbul. The results that were brought out were inconsistent… We go to the female World Championships that took place between 15 and 26 March [in 2023 in India]. On 17 March 2023, both boxers were asked to take a further blood test. That happened, and on 23 March the results came through, and it demonstrated the chromosomes that we referred to within the competition rules – that make both boxers ineligible,” said Roberts.

This news comes amidst ongoing controversy at the Paris Olympics. Khelif, in particular, has been under intense scrutiny. Her recent victories have sparked heated debates and unfounded accusations. IBA President Umar Kremlev also claimed the tests showed “very high” testosterone levels in both athletes. The situation raises questions about fairness in sports. Gabriele Martelli, president of the IBA Coaches Committee, argued that allowing such athletes to compete could be dangerous.

But here’s where things get tricky. The IBA no longer oversees Olympic boxing. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) took over due to concerns about the IBA’s integrity. The IOC’s eligibility criteria differ from the IBA’s. This explains why Khelif and Lin are competing in Paris despite their disqualification last year. It’s a complex issue with no easy answers. These athletes have trained hard for years, and now, they find themselves caught in a storm of controversy.

IOC Backs Imane Khelif And Lin Yu-ting Despite IBA’s Objections
